Change TX Power in BackTrack 5 R2 | DishingTech Edition



A higher dbm value with your card should result in faster and higher percentage of successful results.You can change the tx power using the following commands:

sudo iwconfig (find out where your card is, in this case wlan1)
iw reg set BO
iwconfig wlan1 txpower 30dbm

If you get the following error code:
Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26) :
SET failed on device wlan1 ; Invalid argument.

Make sure you update BackTrack and compat-wireless
takka360 on Ubuntu Forums stated a workaround where you can find a Bolivia (BO) proxy from Hidemyass using the Firefox browser. Disconnect from WICD. Then go to edit preferences > advanced > network > settings and manual proxy. Also add the required port number. Now go to WICD and connect using the new proxy.
Check out CRDA and other regulatory domain codes (Country List). New Zealand (NZ) and are few others are also rated @ 30dbm.


This card is rated more than 30dbm!
Now it is :)

  2. better the signal strength the faster it will crack and less errors you will get. This goes for any app you use. But keep in mind Reaver there are many variables at play.

    I have Ubiquity WifiStation EXT USB-adapter with Atheros AR9002 (AR9271) inside. It works in XiaopanOS only at 20dBm mode. I cannot change it by commands mentioned above. I need to monitor wifi networks far away my adapter, so I strongly need extra power.

    Is there any progress on how to solve this problem?

    I am noob in linux, so will appreciate detailed help.

  4. This does not work in Xiaopan OS at this stage, but in future releases it maybe possible. The new version 0.4.3 you might be able to add a boliva or new zealand proxy through firefox to get the 30dbm you want

  5. If I add proxy in firefox, will this work only in firefox or in minidwep/reaver as well?

  6. it is a system wide thing. Should work with all 3, run the iwconfig again and see what happens.

    Does this problem exists also in Backtrack 5 R1 and R2 Dishingtech editions?
    Are there any good news?

  10. No problem, it should work fine, depends on your card though. An RTL8187L works well changing Txpower. I used the DishingTech edition in the screenshots which is based on R2. Do not update compat-wireless otherwise you will not be able to change Txpower. Some cards have it built into the chip, those are impossible to change Txpower for.

  11. Hi mccc, sorry for entering the discussion, maybe you can help me. How did you got your usb adapter to work? was any special settings that you made? I have an usb wifi with the same chipset and fails to work ("no wifi" error). Thanks! :)

  13. You didn't use the dishingtech edition did you? what card are you trying to enable? some have it set inside the chip rather than have it set with CRDA

  14. Hi, thanks for the tip. Working fine with workaround (BO). And i set it Lubuntu 13.04, not only works in Backtrack

    Is only way to set power temporary, permanent no way ?
